There are many exciting programs scheduled at LAMP this autumn, all of them free and held at the library’s location at 4724 Baum Boulevard, Pittsburgh 15213. One of the most anticipated is the Library’s annual tactile sculpture exhibition Somatosensory: Relating to the Senses. Members of the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors and other area artists will be submitting sculptures for this juried show which will run from November 7th through the 29th. The sculptures, which are meant to be explored by touch, are paired with recordings by each sculptor describing their intent and artistic process. The exhibition opening is on Thursday, November 7 from 4:30 pm until 6:30 pm, and both the opening and the show are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, September 12, Creative Citizen Studios Presents an Art Workshop designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, in which participants can explore various art techniques. Citizen artists discover and nurture their own self-expression, drawing out the true creativity of each individual. This exploratory class runs from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm. Caregivers are welcome. Registration is required.

Find out how to create beautiful crafts and works of art from reused materials when the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse presents Create and Learn on Tuesday, October 8 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm. Learn to enjoy the artistic process by using a huge array of donated materials, promoting sustainability while nurturing your own creative instincts! For all ages.

With Halloween approaching, LAMP’s quarterly Accessible Movie Afternoon will be showing the chilling mystery A Haunting in Venice based on an Agatha Christie novel. In this atmospheric Kenneth Branagh film (rated PG-13), Hercule Poirot attends a séance at which a guest is murdered. Accessible movies include an audio description of what is happening visually on the screen. The film runs from 1:00 to 3:30 pm on Thursday, October 10. Registration is not required but is suggested.

On Thursday, October 24 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm, the Alzheimer’s Association Presents the Impact of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in our Community. Learn about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s, the importance of early detection, what you can do to improve brain health, the latest treatments and available resources. For adults.

Find out how to recognize the different signs that animals have left behind when Allegheny County Park Rangers Present Tracks and Scat. Examine replicas of animal tracts and scat and learn how to identify which animals in our area they belong to. This program is on Tuesday, November 12 from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm and is for all ages.

LAMP offers a combined in-person and virtual Hybrid Book Club on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. Lively discussions are led by Reader Advisors Katie Jackson and Luke Monteleone. Books are selected by the participants and alternate each month between fiction and nonfiction. Virtual participation can be accessed on a smartphone, tablet or computer via a Zoom link. Registration is required, and because attendance is limited, priority is given to LAMP members.

Led by Service Integration Lead Stephen McMillen, LAMP’s popular Tactile Tuesdays continue throughout fall on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Explore shapes and forms produced by various means including the Library’s 3D printer, its Swell Form graphics machine, 3D pen, braille embosser and other means. Past Tactile Tuesday themes have included the Olympics, solar eclipse, Picklesburgh, seasonal changes and holidays. Some objects produced were the Cathedral of Learning, the Capitol building and various crafts made by participants. Music is sometimes included and requests are taken. Tactile Tuesdays are always an enjoyable time for all.
