Summer Reading at LAMP/Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians is designed specifically for patrons of LAMP, a Network Library of the Library of Congress’ National Library Service, Library for the Blind and Print Disabled.

Join LAMP as we celebrate Summer Reading from June 6th to August 12th.

This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities” and LAMP patrons, ages 0-21, are invited to dive deep into a summer full of reading and fun.

Welcome to Summer Reading 101!

What is the Summer Reading Program at LAMP?

Summer Reading Programs confront summer learning loss (sometimes known as the “summer slide”) by building a library community that reads and learns together, even when school is not in session. The Summer Reading Program at LAMP will provide an opportunity for young patrons to earn rewards for reading throughout the summer. While the overarching theme is “Oceans of Possibilities”, each month will have a specific focus with accompanying virtual programs and activities to complete at home.

Here is a sneak peek of each month:

  • June is dedicated to Ocean Treasures.
  • July is Shark Month!
  • August will be full of Curious Creatures like mermaids, pirates and the Loch Ness Monster!

Pennsylvania patrons can participate in one, two, or all three months of the Summer Reading Program. Additionally, LAMP will offer a virtual storytime program each month, along with a corresponding activity to complete at home. When registering, patrons can select the option to have materials for activities sent to their preferred address. Activities are designed to incorporate materials that are likely to be found in a classroom or home, but we are happy to provide supplies to patrons.

When is the Summer Reading Program?

Summer Reading will take place this year from Monday, June 6th to Friday, August 12th. LAMP patrons may register at any point throughout the summer. Those who register before May 15th will receive a prize!

Who is invited to participate?

This year, Summer Reading is planned specifically for our younger patrons up to 21 years old.  However, if our adult LAMP patrons would like to participate and track their reading, they are more than welcome to sign up by calling LAMP at 800-242-0586 or sending an email to info@mylamp.org!

How many books do I have to read?

Research indicates that reading 5 books over the summer will help prevent summer learning loss. We invite Summer Reading participants to aim to read at least 5 books over the course of the three months of the Summer Reading program. However, each Book Log has 40 spots for tracking books! For every 5 books that are read, participants will be eligible to win a prize.

How do I sign up?

Registration forms will be sent through postal mail to patrons up to 21 years old. These forms can be returned through postal mail or patrons may call 800-242-0586 or email info@mylamp.org to express their interest in participating in the Summer Reading Program! Registrants will receive a Summer Reading bundle that will include their Book Log, stickers for tracking book titles, a calendar of virtual programs, and a book list of “Oceans of Possibilities” titles in LAMP’s Juvenile and Young Adult collection.

We are looking forward to facilitating an engaging and fun summer for our young patrons! Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. We can be reached at info@mylamp.org or by phone at 800-242-0586. In the meantime, happy reading!
