Summer Reading Check-In
by: Carolyn Rees
Our Oceans of Possibilities Youth Summer Reading Program is going “swimmingly”! Fifty LAMP patrons between 0-21 years old are participating and tracking the number of titles they read this summer with ocean animal puffy stickers on their book logs.
June’s monthly theme was “Ocean Treasures.” Our first virtual program consisted of making tactile coral reefs with recycled materials such as egg cartons, pipe cleaners, textured paper and pom poms. Supplemental materials were sent to registrants along with a list of suggested items to collect ahead of time! Along with building our own coral reefs, we learned fun facts about ocean animals. For example, a collective of jellyfish is called a smack! Speaking of jellyfish, one of our youth summer readers highly recommends The Thing About Jellyfish by Ali Benjamin (DB 82842). Contact the library to request your copy and register for summer reading if you haven’t already! LAMP patrons can register anytime through the program’s end on August 12. While there are plenty of aquatic themed titles to enjoy, participants are invited to read anything they like!
If you are over 21 years old and a LAMP patron, you are still invited to participate in Summer Reading. Our Adult Summer Reading Program runs from June 6 – August 12 and includes incentives for registering and completing your first book! Both Summer Reading Programs include a book list of titles that align with the theme. Dive deep into LAMP’s collection of aquatic titles available in audio, braille, large print and/or on BARD. In the meantime, contact us at 800-242-0586 or info@mylamp.org to register for either the Youth or Adult Summer Reading Program so you can start earning prizes while reading pool or beachside!
