LAMP is not only a library; we are also a state of the art recording studio that has added more than 700 audio books to the Library of Congress’ National Library Service Catalog. Working over a span of years that began in the early 1970’s and continues today with three accessible sound booths and a full digital array of equipment and support systems, we offer a unique and accessible service that adds locally themed books from start to finish. Our motto: Leave no Pennsylvania book behind!
The heart of our studio is the people who volunteer and work here. At present, we have more than 200 volunteers who are all engaged in unique capacities such as Monitor, Narrator, Editor, Production Specialist and Quality Assurance Monitor. Each plays a vital role in the long road to the final production of an audio book and every role is as invaluable as another. Imagine a jigsaw puzzle with a missing piece that never seems quite done without it, and you can understand how we all work together to get the job done.
Our focus is to produce audio books that have a Pennsylvania connection, meaning the subject matter or the authorship is related in some way to our Commonwealth. This includes fiction and non-fiction, children and adults, poetry to prose, and special projects that arise from time to time for our community’s needs.
Our client list of people we have worked for and with includes:
- The City of Pittsburgh Mayor’s Office
- Open Up Pittsburgh
- Pittsburgh Public Schools
- The Ellis School
- The Library of Congress’ Veteran’s History Project
- Pennsylvania Serves
- Pittsburgh Deaf Blind Lions Club
- Church Groups
- Community Mental Health Support Groups
Every so often, a local celebrity will stop by to record a book and leaves with the feeling that they have helped in a big way.
This includes:
- Mayor Bob O’Connor
- Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald
- Congressman Conor Lamb
- City Council Woman Erika Strassburger
Just to mention a few…
Our philosophy is simple: Equal opportunity for all to serve our community of blind and print disabled patrons by creating audio books that have not existed in an accessible format before. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in working for, please give us a call.
